The energy used by the industrial sector accounts for approximately 39% of the total Canadian consumption of secondary energy. It also contributes in approximately the same proportion to Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with a total of 159 MT of CO2 equivalent in 2001. This substantial share of total energy consumption illustrates the significant impact of Canada’s industrial sector.

Recent estimates show that, even in processes with good energy performance, energy consumption can be reduced by 10% to 20% in a cost-effective way. Inefficiencies in industrial processes can be identified and corrected to reduce both energy costs and environmental impacts associated with plant operations. Systematic process analysis methods, such as Process Integration and intelligent process control systems are recognized amongst the best to correct these inefficiencies.
The methods and techniques developed by CETC-Varennes primarily target the above-mentioned industrial sectors.
