Sea-to-Sky Field Trip

Natural Resources Canada geoscientists share their expertise with local school teachers on a day-long guided field trip

Natural Resources Canada geoscientists Jim Monger and Bert Struik will share their expertise with local school teachers on this day-long guided field trip. The tour group will explore Howe Sound geology at stops along the Sea-to-Sky highway, then tour the BC Museum of Mining to learn about the industrial and social history around Britannia Mines.

Guest speakers will talk about remediation accomplishments, provide a tour of the new acid-rock drainage treatment plant and show future site plans associated with the Britannia Project. More information and a registration form (required) are available at the Mineral Resources Education Program of British Columbia or phone 604-681-4321 ext. # 108.

The excursion is co-sponsored by the Mineral Resources Education Program of B.C. and the B.C. Museum of Mining, with the cooperation of Golder Associates and EPCOR.

There's lots to learn at numerous

Natural Resources Canada scientists will entertain and educate about science through a series of Talk-It science seminars. Then they will walk the talk on the Walk-It Science excursion - daily mini-hikes around the David Douglas Trail with stops at numerous forest stations.

Hazards Happen

Vancouver, British Columbia, Thursday, October 19, Earth Sciences Sector, 625 Robson Street

Local teachers are invited to bring their classes to Natural Resources Canada downtown office in Vancouver for an exciting and educational look at earthquakes, floods and volcanic eruptions. Three stations will have a HAZARD-IN-A-BOX, which will demonstrate to participants what the local impacts of particular natural disasters might look like. All participants earn a Junior Hazard Explorer badge complete with photo I.D.

Want something even more hands-on? Creative types are challenged to create a piece of original Haz-Art that will be put on permanent display in the Geological Survey of Canada Vancouver Library!

Plate Tectonics and Vancouver Island Geology

Teachers are invited to learn about why the Earth shakes and how the mountain blows! The National EdGEO Workshop Program, Natural Resources Canada and the Canadian Council for Geographic Education have organized a special professional-development day workshop for teachers to help them understand the science of earthquakes and volcanoes. Experts will educate teachers with short talks, followed up with a variety of hands-on demonstrations that will unlock the puzzle that is Vancouver Island's tectonic plates.
