Recent Amendments

Amendment 6 to increase the minimum energy performance standards for ballasts and room air conditioners and to establish minimum energy performance standards for dry-type transformers and incandescent reflector lamps was registered on April 10, 2003 and published in the Canada Gazette Part II on April 23.

This amendment increases the stringency of the existing energy efficiency standards for fluorescent lamp ballasts ("ballasts"), room air conditioners and 60 to 66 Watt PAR lamps. It introduces new standards for BR and ER incandescent reflector lamps and dry-type transformers. The amendment also updates the energy performance test procedures referenced for general service fluorescent lamps and motors and introduces minor changes to dishwasher and model number definitions and to annual energy consumption calculations. The revisions to the standards for ballasts, reflector lamps, room air conditioners and dishwashers are, with some minor differences, consistent with the standards currently in effect in the United States.

The change to the model number definition is to clarify the intent and use of the model number within the compliance process of the Energy Efficiency Regulations. The term designator is not restrictive and allows for flexibility in choice of a "model number". The new definition also specifies how the "model number" is used and stresses the consistency between the requirements of the different sections of the act referencing "model number".

The effective dates of this amendment for the various products are as follows:
  Effective immediately: reflector lamps, room air conditioners, and dishwashers;
Effective January 1, 2005: dry- type transformers; and
Effective April 1, 2005: fluorescent lamp ballasts

There was no substantive change between the proposed amendment as pre-published in the Canada Gazette Part I, and the amendment as published.
