BULLETIN
May 2001

Refrigerators, Combination Refrigerator-Freezers and Freezers

Refrigerators, combination refrigerator-freezers and freezers were prescribed as a regulated product under the Energy Efficiency Regulations which came into effect on February 3, 1995. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has amended these Regulations to establish minimum efficiency levels that are identical to those that were published in the U.S. Federal Register on April 28, 1997 and which will be implemented in the U.S. on July 1, 2001.

Product Description

The amended regulations apply to:

  1. Household refrigerators and combination refrigerator-freezers that have a capacity not exceeding 1100 L (39 cubic feet) other than a refrigerator that employs an absorption refrigeration system.
  2. Household freezers that have a capacity not exceeding 850 L (30 cubic feet).

Energy Performance Test Procedure

CAN/CSA-C300-00, Capacity Measurement and Energy Consumption Test Methods for Refrigerators, Combination Refrigerator-Freezers and Freezers.

Energy Efficiency Standards

Refrigerators, combination refrigerator-freezers and freezers manufactured on or after the effective date must meet the maximum energy consumption limits in kWh per year specified in Table 1.

Labelling Requirements

For the purposes of energy efficiency labelling, it is proposed that the annual energy consumption value, which will appear on the EnerGuide label for refrigerators, combination refrigerator-freezers, and freezers on or after July 1, 2001, shall be determined using the new CAN/CSA-C300-00 energy performance test procedure.

Verification, Reporting and Importing Requirements

There are no changes to the verification, reporting and importing requirements currently in place for refrigerators, combination refrigerator-freezers, and freezers.

Effective Dates

Energy Efficiency Standards

For refrigerators or combination refrigerator-freezers other than Type 3 combination refrigerator-freezers with a total refrigerated volume  > 410.65 L and  < 521.10 L ( > 14.5 cu.ft. and  < 18.4  cu.ft.), the effective date for the new energy efficiency standards is July 1, 2001.

For Type 3 combination refrigerator-freezers with a total refrigerated volume  > 410.65 L and  < 521.10 L (> 14.5 cu.ft. and  < 18.4 cu.ft.), the effective date for the new energy efficiency standards is December 31, 2002.

For freezers, the effective date for the new energy efficiency standards is July 1, 2001.

Energy Performance Test Procedure

For refrigerators, combination refrigerator-freezers and freezers, the effective date for the new CAN/CSA-C300-00 energy performance test procedure is July 1, 2001.
