Energy Retrofit Assistance for Implementation Projects (ERA-I)

The EnerGuide for Existing Buildings (EEB) can help your business, institution or other eligible organizations by providing Energy Retrofit Assistance (ERA-I) funding for retrofit implementation projects. This incentive can be used to help pay for costs related to, management, materials, labour, monitoring and tracking, staff training, awareness and for other retrofit implementation projects in your existing buildings. Measures for efficient lighting, the building envelope, motors, controls, heating, ventilating, air conditioning and other energy-saving projects may be eligible.

How the Implementation Incentive Works

If considering an energy retrofit project, EEB members can receive up to $7.50 per gigajoule (1 GJ = 277.8 equivalent kilowatt hours) of annual energy savings or up to 25 percent of eligible costs – whichever amount is less – to a maximum of $250,000.

Please Note

  • The September 15, 2006 deadline for submitting ERA proposals is now expired. Currently, the program has received proposals exceeding its financial capacity. The program may consider additional applications until December 15, 2006, if funds are still available.

  • Do not sign contracts or start work until funding is approved. The project must be completed within one year after the Government of Canada signs the Contribution Agreement.

  • Copies of invoices for at least 25 percent of eligible costs or an amount equal to the incentive, whichever is greater, must be received before March 19, 2007.

  • To certify energy savings, you will require the signature of a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) at several stages of the project, and these fees may exceed funding for smaller projects.

  • You can find a P.Eng. through the Energy Management Services Directory.

  • In some cases, you can also apply for ERA-P for retrofit planning activities from Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency.

  • Keep current with recent ERA policy updates by subscribing to the Heads Up Energy Efficiency newsletter.
