Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC)

The Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC) is a voluntary partnership between the Government of Canada and industry to improve Canada's industrial energy efficiency. CIPEC brings together industry associations and companies that represent more than 95 percent of all industrial energy use in Canada.

For the last 30 years, CIPEC has been helping companies cut costs and increase profits by providing several tools to improve energy efficiency:

Energy Efficiency: Good for Business – Good for the Environment

Through CIPEC, the mining, manufacturing and construction sectors have voluntarily met and exceeded annual targets to reduce their energy intensity – the energy they use per unit of output. Upstream oil and gas companies have implemented projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by millions of tonnes. And electrical utilities have dramatically increased their alternative energy production.

Thanks in part to CIPEC's efforts, the more than 5000 companies that represent over 98 percent of Canadian industry have reduced their combined energy intensity by 8.7 percent between 1990 and 2003, or an average of 0.7 percent per year. Improved energy management enabled Canadian industry to avoid approximately $3.4 billion in purchased energy in 2003, enough energy to meet the energy required to heat 4.8 million Canadian households for one year.
