DESCRIPTIONS

Public Health (780): 427-7142 provides leadership in health surveillance, disease control and prevention, and population health strategy development. Facilitates coordinated approaches to improving public health and medical care through public health policy development.

Health Workforce (780) 427-1912: With regional health authorities, physicians, professional colleges and other partners, promotes innovative approaches and strategies to achieve a balanced workforce to meet Alberta's health needs in a fiscally sustainable manner. Responsible for physician and allied health compensation negotiations; administration of the tri-lateral master agreement between Alberta Health and Wellness, the Alberta Medical Association, and regional health authorities; alternate physician remuneration arrangements; health workforce policy & planning; Telehealth and Alberta Provider Directory operations; and the office of the provincial medical care consultant.

Information Strategic Services (780) 427-5280: provides leadership in setting the provincial strategic direction for the Electronic Health Record, provincial IM/IT policy direction, and IM/IT's security standards as well as the development and support of information systems that support the business needs of Alberta Health and Wellness. The division is also responsible for developing and implementing information management policies related to the collection, access, use and disclosure of information in accordance with legislative requirements (including the Health Information Act.)

Program Services (780) 427-1432: is responsible for managing information and programs that deal with insured health care services for Albertans and health care providers. Included in this mandate is the administration of the Alberta Health Care Insurance Act, provision of customer services, registration and benefit processing, and management of the provincial Emergency Health Services (ambulance services). The division is also responsible for managing a process to improve decision-making regarding public funding of new services and technologies. Specific branches in the division include Client Services, Emergency Health Services, Integrative Business and Information Systems and Innovation and Monitoring.

Strategic Directions: (780) 427-2653: Responsible for strategic health policy, ministry business planning and annual reporting, pharmacy programs and policy, health research policy, health system quality improvement and accountability, and works with federal/provincial/territorial health departments on current and emerging health-related intergovernmental initiatives. Coordinates environmental scanning to identify, track and respond to strategic issues, administers the Health Care Protection Act, and coordinates continuing care health service standards with regional health authorities. Manages the cross-ministry initiatives related to health and wellness, and works with Health Boards of Alberta on health system governance, and strategic service planning and policy initiatives.

Corporate Operations (780): 427-0885 provides leadership on internal and external funding allocations, financial accountability, costing of health services, fiscal planning and governance to sustain the public health system. Conducts analytical studies and works with the Auditor General on fiscal reporting matters.  Manages Alberta Health and Wellness financial resources, capital planning and advises the department on legal and legislative issues. Works with other divisions in the department to assess and develop risk methodology.

Communications (780) 427-7164: Provides strategic communications counsel and support to help the department, Minister and government communicate on health issues with the health system and Albertans. Initiates information programs and public education campaigns, and provides services that include media relations, correspondence support and liaising with department staff and other partners.

Human Resources (780) 427-1060: Provides leadership and advice on strategic directions for human resources management within the department. Areas of expertise include human resource planning, organizational analysis and design, job evaluation and compensation, employee benefits, staffing, employee development and employee relations. Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission  (AADAC)  1-866-322-2322: Provides or funds a range of alcohol, other drug and problem gambling prevention, treatment and information services for Albertans through a network of offices and community agencies. Services include community outpatient counseling and prevention, crisis and detoxification, residential treatment and research, information and monitoring services.   (website: http://www.aadac.com/)
