Canada's Natural Resources Now and for the Future

Forestry

Canada's forests are part of our national heritage and our legacy. We are deeply committed to ensuring healthy forests and a strong forest sector, now and for future generations. Natural Resources Canada oversees this responsibility through the Canadian Forest Service, the largest forest science organization in Canada.

For more than a century, we have provided the Canadian forest sector with world-leading scientific research and expertise, with a focus now on understanding forest ecosystems and developing strategies for advancing sustainable forest management. Through this, Canada has developed niches in areas such as forest fire and pest management techniques.

We also play a pivotal role in forest policy development in Canada and abroad, advising on policy, science and technical matters for national and international initiatives.

Through cooperation and by building consensus with clients across Canada, we offer advanced technologies and systems for collecting and integrating information, as well as innovative approaches to sustainably manage our forests.

A Model for Sustainable Development

Canada has developed innovative solutions in the management, health, protection and renewal of forests. One example is Canada's Model Forest Program, under which partnerships of individuals and organizations work together in 11 Model Forests covering more than 9 million hectares. These groups take both local needs and global concerns into account as they develop new, on-the-ground approaches to sustainable forest management. This precedent-setting program led to the creation of the International Model Forest Network that today includes more than a dozen countries.

One in every 16 Canadian jobs is in the wood and paper products industries or related industries. By using our forest resources wisely, forestry will remain one of the country's most important industries, contributing to our prosperity and improving our quality of life.
