resources. It ranks among top countries in the world for production
of oil, natural gas, uranium and coal.
By fostering the sustainable development and wise use of energy resources,
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)
enhances the economic, social and environmental well-being of Canadians,
both now and for the future.
NRCan delivers programs
that encourage innovative energy technologies, increase energy efficiency
in all sectors, and develop and promote alternative and renewable sources
of energy. We analyze industry and market trends, and develop regulations
(within areas of federal jurisdiction) to maintain Canada's energy sector
as an important contributor to our economic well-being. We also work
with private and public sector as well as international partners on science
and technology activities.
Canada's energy industry is meeting the challenges of our high-tech,
knowledge-based society. These industries are at the cutting edge of
innovation, developing new technologies and expertise in the efficient
production and use of conventional, renewable and alternative sources
of energy.
Addressing Climate Change
Greenhouse
gas emissions are a major contributor to climate
change. Being more energy-efficient and using alternative and
renewable energy sources will help Canada reduce its emissions. To
address this challenge, we provide more than 40 programs to promote energy
efficiency and alternative energy sources in the residential,
commercial, industrial and transportation fields. As well, we conduct
research and development in areas such as buildings, communities
and transportation that show strong potential for reducing carbon
dioxide emissions.
The world looks to Canada for its expertise in energy technologies and
production. Canada will continue to promote energy efficiency, pursue
alternative and renewable
energy sources and new, clean
technologies such as fuel
cells. Using our energy resources sustainably ensures that the quality
of life we enjoy now will be maintained in the future.
