Canada's Natural Resources Now and for the Future

Image of a ForestThe greatest ally of Canada's old-growth forests could be new fast-growing, insect-resistant trees, specially grown for the needs of Canada's high-tech forestry industry.

NRCan scientists at the Laurentian Forestry Centre are pioneering new ways to give spruce trees powerful natural defences against their mortal enemy, the spruce budworm.

For instance, scientists are examining why some trees are more pest resistant. They will use this new knowledge to build the resistance of other trees.

And NRCan scientists are helping trees grow faster, too. These quick-growing trees reduce the pressure on our forests and the use of traditional pesticides, and are the key to the future for the 877,000 Canadians whose jobs are supported by forestry and forest products.
