Manitoba Churchill River, Lynn Lake Shield Margin Project Western Superior Winnipeg

This view, looking south over downtown Winnipeg towards the Red River valley, shows that the city is built on the former flat bed of glacial Lake Agassiz. The region is vulnerable to extensive flooding - and recent research has clarified just how vulnerable! Beneath the area, clay deposits cap a groundwater system in which saline and fresh waters are in a delicate balance - a balance that is now managed with the aid of 3D geological maps of the subsurface.
