Geomorphic effects and impacts from July 1996 severe flooding in the Saguenay area, Quebec

Photo 3 - Damaged bridge with railway tracks suspended in mid-air

An extreme example of concave bank erosion that resulted in damage to a bridge occurred at this site along Rivière à Mars. During the flood, about 75 m of concave bank erosion completely removed the left abutment of a railway bridge along the opposite side of the channel causing the left span to collapse into the river. The railway tracks, undermined by the collapsed span and continued further erosion of the railway bed, remain suspended across the post-flood river channel. Photograph taken on July 27, 1996 (GSC photograph number not yet assigned).
