The big drill at Prospector-Russell is now in good working order. A short test hole has been done to make sure all is well. Work has now started on the main hole, from which the team expects to extract a 200-metre ice core.
Also at Prospector- Russell Col, Hċkan Samuelsson and Jeff Bellis are making day trips and extracting a 15-metre ice core with a hand drill, or auger. This work is deliberately located at the site of the a major core taken in the early 1980's by Gerry Holdsworth of the Arctic Institute of North America. Gerry is a member of the ICE2001 team, based at King Col.
While the drilling is underway at Prospector- Russell Col, three members of ICE2001 are in a mobile camp moving up to King Col from the Quintino Sella Glacier. It will take them several days to get there, as they are stopping to dig snow pits and collect samples along the way.
