Purpose of the Environmental Sustainability Policy
To ensure that the NCC incorporates considerations of environmental sustainability into all of its plans, programs, activities and projects.
Policy Statements
The NCC shall:
- ensure that all its plans, programs, activities, and projects address short- and long-term environmental sustainability issues and consider the links that exist between, and promote a harmonious relationship among, economic, social, and natural (biophysical) components of the environment;
- emulate federal policies, legislation and strategies that by their own terms do not expressly apply to the NCC; and take into account all relevant provincial or municipal policies, legislation and strategies pertaining to environmental sustainability;
- strive to adopt a best-management approach to sustainability;
- consult with and maintain partnerships with both the public and external agencies in order to address shared environmental sustainability challenges;
- develop and maintain specific operational policies and strategies pertaining to environmental sustainability issues and opportunities;
- maintain a corporate environmental management strategy for the natural (biophysical) environment, in recognition of its extensive landholdings and its contributions to the ecological health and symbolism of the National Capital Region;
- adopt and keep current measurable environmental targets, and regularly monitor, evaluate, and report on its corporate environmental performance; and
- continually improve its environmental performance, and strive to reduce overall risk to human health and environmental integrity, through pollution prevention and the management of natural resources.
