Forest Conditions

Ecozone Map of Canada (small) The forested ecozones of Canada are used as the ecological reporting framework by the Canadian Forest Service. Two to three forested ecozones are addressed each year. Canada consists of 15 terrestrial ecozones and 5 marine ecozones. These ecozones delineate ecologically distinctive areas of the Earth’s surface. They represent a distinct mesh and interplay of geologic, climatic, vegetative, wildlife and human factors that may be present. The dominance of any one or a number of these factors varies with the ecozone. The terrestrial ecozones are used by several federal agencies for national reporting purposes and are linked to ecological reporting carried out by several provinces and territories. Internationally, they are linked to the Ecological Regions of North America as developed by the Commission for Environmental Cooperative of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and to the Global Ecological Regions prepared by the Food And Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
