Don’t miss these two great summer activities at the Mackenzie King Estate!

Nighttime Magic at the Mackenzie King Estate

A new evening event presented Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings from July 19 to 21, 2006, 8:30 pm to 11 pm.  Free admission (no parking fees).

Come and celebrate the magic of an evening at the Mackenzie King Estate! This year marks the 70th anniversary of the installation of the ruins at the Estate. To celebrate this event, the gardens and ruins will be illuminated for guided tours from 8:30 pm until 11 pm.

Join us for free, nighttime tours and rediscover a piece of Canadian heritage. Who knows? You may even meet a few characters from the past along the way!

Special programming is offered for the evening visits.

Reservations are required for the guided tours. Please call 819-827-2020. Evening access to the Estate is reserved for guided tours only. Don’t forget to bring a flashlight!

Special ProgramSpecial program offered from 8:30 pm to 11 pm

  • Historical characters associated with William Lyon Mackenzie King and the Estate will greet you during the tour.
  • Duets of live classical music will be provided by the Brawn Classical Music Ensemble (July 19, flute and guitar; July 20, flute and harp; July 21, flute and cello).
  • The Moorside Tearoom will be open from 9 am until 9 pm. The regular menu will be accented by dishes decorated with edible flowers. A selection of floral teas will also be available (e.g. rose). Reservations are recommended. Call 8198273405.
  • A short documentary film on the history of William Lyon Mackenzie King will be presented to visitors.
  • The VIA Rail Garden Route contest, organized by International Flora Montréal 2006, will be taking place until August 17. The approximate value of the grand prize is $1075. 
  • A silent auction has been organized by the Friends of Gatineau Park. The item being auctioned is an oil painting depicting Moorside and the gardens at the Mackenzie King Estate, which was donated by local artist John Alexander Day. The painting will be on display in the Moorside Tearoom, where you may also place your bid for the auction.

The Estate in Bloom

Special activities on Saturday and Sunday, July 22 and 23, 2006, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Admission: $7.90 per vehicle.

Each year, the NCC invites the public to come enjoy the splendour and beauty of the gardens and landscape at the Mackenzie King Estate in Gatineau Park. Special programming is offered for the duration of the weekend.

  • Visitors will be greeted by historical characters associated with William Lyon Mackenzie King.
  • Guided tours of the gardens will be given by volunteers dressed in period clothing.
  • Interpretation activities will be offered to inform visitors about the landscape and natural surroundings of the Mackenzie King Estate.
  • Flower-themed children’s activities (create a flower bookmark, or a pot of flowers made of paper) and period games (beanbag toss and croquet) will be organized.
  • Interpretation of the Estate's wild flowers by a professional biologist.
  • Films about the life of William Lyon Mackenzie King will be presented.
  • The VIA Rail Garden Route contest, organized by International Flora Montréal 2006, will be taking place until August 17, 2006. You could win a trip to Montréal to visit the Flora 2006 exhibit.
  • A silent auction has been organized by the Friends of Gatineau Park. An oil painting of Moorside and the gardens at the Mackenzie King Estate, donated by local artist John Alexander Day, will auctioned. You can view the painting and participate in the auction at the Moorside Tearoom.
