Expert Group on Mineral and Energy Exploration and Development (GEMEED)

APEC logoThird Annual Meeting

GEMEED was created at the initiative of Chile and Korea as a sub-group of APEC’s Energy Working Group. The first meeting took place in Santiago in May 1996. The second meeting took place in Seoul in March 1997. Mr. Tomás Astorga of the Chilean Ministry of Mines is the Chairman of GEMEED; Chile also provides the Secretariat.

GEMEED provides a forum in which to address both mining and energy exploration and development issues in APEC. While the first meetings were oriented very much towards investment-related issues, the Third Annual Meeting focussed on the sustainable development of minerals and metals.

The Third Annual Meeting was held in Ottawa on May 8, 11 and 12, 1998, and was hosted by Natural Resources Canada. It included a half-day industry panel that focussed on the theme "Towards Sustainable Development of Minerals and Metals." This panel offered a forum for industry to promote its efforts to implement sustainable development and to provide examples of best practices that could be adopted in other APEC economies.
