Metadata is information about information or information about
data. Libraries and museums have been using a type of metadata for
many years to catalogue and index their books and artifacts. The
information technology community is taking metadata one step further.
They are using it to document and catalogue data.
The Forest Health Network has recently completed the metadata
records for the National Forest Health Database. This metadata is
an abstract for the information contained in this database. Information
such as data on what, collected when, why, by whom, and who to contact
for more information are all part of this metadata. This metadata
has just become Web accessible through CEOnet (Canadian Earth Observation
Network) at
http://ceonet.ccrs.nrcan.gc.ca/cs/en/index.html
The easiest way to search the National Forest Health Database
metadata is from the CEONet homepage, choose the Data option and
then Search for Products using keywords (such as forest health,
tree, insect). The results will then lead you to search this metadata
in more details.
