Human Activity and the Environment

This information represents activities in the Earth Sciences Sector Programs (2002-2006). Please refer to Priorities for information on current Earth Sciences Sector Programs.

Human Activity and the EnvironmentStatistics Canada is using the National Atlas Frameworks project's 1:1M Watershed Framework for national monitoring in its Human Activity and the Environment report. This report is published every 5 years and updated every year. It is a collection of environmental statistics, brought together from many sources that provides a statistical picture of Canada's environment with special emphasis on human activity and its relationship to natural systems' air, water, soil, plants and animals with a view to supporting sustainable development. Human Activity and the Environment provides extensive data on population, economic activities, the environment and the links among these key elements.

The 1:1M Watershed Framework is now being used in the Annual Statistics 2003 update and will be included in the larger compendium at the time of the next publication. The 2003 update also includes a feature article Fresh Water Resources.
