Explosives Certification

At CERL, we provide testing and certification services to manufacturers and distributors of a wide range of products, including blasting explosives and accessories, ammunition, propellants, fireworks and industrial pyrotechnic and explosive devices. CERL has well-equipped laboratory facilities and extensive testing capabilities, including facilities for three of the UN-specified impact tests and one UN-specified friction test. This allows CERL's results to be used internationally. CERL's commitment to quality is internationally recognized through its ISO/IEC Guide 17025 accreditation.

Our goal is to provide rapid and cost-effective certification services to enable products to be authorized by the Chief Inspector of Explosives. In Canada, explosives are regulated by Canada's Explosives Act. CERL strives to provide high-quality service with fast response time by:

  • Providing advice on shipping of uncertified products to CERL for testing;
  • Scheduling the required tests in an efficient and timely manner;
  • Effectively communicating with the Explosives Regulatory Division of Natural Resources Canada on the client's behalf concerning any day-to-day logistics or scheduling problems.

At CERL, we provide a full range of physical, chemical and thermal testing, according to test specifications for transport, storage and handling provided in:

  • UN Recommendations for the Transport of Dangerous Goods - Test and Criteria ("Test Criteria Manual");
  • Associated national and international codes and legislation;
  • Health and safety standards, codes and legislation;
  • CERL's own test procedures, where appropriate standards have not yet been developed.

CERL is approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation to issue tentative classifications so that samples can be shipped to the laboratory from manufacturers in the United States. Classification testing at CERL can result in products being approved for transport by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
