Project: Monitoring methods and assessment of carbon sequestration over Canada's landmass
Sub-activity: The carbon storage potential of Canada's coal beds

This information represents activities in the Earth Sciences Sector Programs (2002-2006). Please refer to Priorities for information on current Earth Sciences Sector Programs.

Although this is a component of a National Assessment of geological sequestration in coal through the National Coal Inventory, the focus over the next three years will be on the Alberta Plains because: i) Alberta is Canada's largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions with many large point sources of CO2, ii) the Alberta Plains has the largest concentration of widespread thick coal seams in Canada which directly underlie these point sources, iii) implementing CO2 storage in coal seams in Alberta will provide the largest and earliest impact on CO2 reduction of any region in Canada. The products of the work within the three-year timeframe will be a thorough and comprehensive understanding of where and how much of Alberta's greenhouse gas emissions problem can be mitigated by the coal solution.
