Natural Hazards and Emergency Response
NRCan Nuclear Emergency Preparedness and Response

Project enhances public safety through radiation detection in the event of the scattering of radioactive material either by accident or through malicious intent. The Earth Science Sector through NRCan has committed to accomplish this goal with federal partners through the Federal Nuclear Emergency Plan (FNEP) and the pan-federal government Chemical - Biological - Radiological - Nuclear Research and Technology Initiative (CRTI). Specifically, this project delivers rapid radioactivity monitoring, from the ground and air, and technical expertise before, during, and after a civil radiological/nuclear incident. Output is near-realtime maps and data for use by site, municipal, provincial and federal emergency response teams. These maps will be used throughout the planning and execution of the response phase to identify, evaluate and isolate radioactive contamination, and through the recovery phase for clean-up, long term monitoring, and forensic investigation. Outcome is the demonstrated preparedness for improved response (supporting reduction in loss of life/property).
