Natural Hazards and Emergency Response
National Emergency Preparedness Act

This information represents activities in the Earth Sciences Sector Programs (2002-2006). Please refer to Priorities for information on current Earth Sciences Sector Programs.

Earth Science Sector has taken on several of Natural Resources Canada's responsibilities under the Emergency Preparedness Act. These responsibilities are:

"With respect to civil emergency preparedness in general, the department [NRCan] is responsible for developing and maintaining civil emergency plans for:

  1. the provision of seismological and other technical information and advice related to the probable or actual occurrence and intensity of earthquakes, eruptions, subsidences, tsunamis, and electromagnetic storms;

    ...

  1. the provision of technical survey and remote sensing information, and other expertise, material or facilities which may be requested by provincial and other federal departments."
