Canada's chief vulnerability to earthquakes is concentrated in a few urban regions. Recent advances in seismic sensor technology, digital communications, computer hardware and software, and GPS technology make it possible to revolutionize the approach to seismic hazard mitigation in urban areas by deploying real-time, advanced earthquake and ground deformation monitoring systems. Such monitoring systems can put maps of actual shaking intensity in the hands of emergency officials immediately after a strong earthquake and allow forecasting of aftershock patterns.
This project placed a small detailed pattern of strong motion seismometers in greater Vancouver (Canada's highest seismic risk urban region) to test these technologies before it was stopped. This network is presently operated through the national seismic network.
