BACKGROUNDER

CANADIAN CLIMATE IMPACTS AND ADAPTATION
RESEARCH NETWORK (C-CIARN)

The Canadian Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research Network (C-CIARN) is a national network that brings researchers together with decision makers from industry, governments and non-government organizations to address key issues of understanding and adapting to our changing climate.

The network helps identify priorities for research and provides policy and decision makers with credible information on vulnerabilities to climate change. In addition, the network will report on research gaps, priorities and capacity needs to policy makers, academics, stakeholders and funding agencies. It acts as a central database for contacts, research results and information on potential sources of research funding.

Structure
C-CIARN consists of six regions and seven national sectors connecting researchers and stakeholders across the country. It holds ongoing meetings and workshops between researchers and stakeholders to address climate change impact and adaptation issues.

C-CIARN Regions Location of Coordinating Office
British Columbia Sustainable Development Research Institute, University of British Columbia, and University of Victoria
Prairies Prairie Adaptation Research Collaborative, University of Regina
Ontario Laurentian University, Sudbury
Quebec Ouranos, the Quebec Consortium on Regional Climatology and Adaptation to Climate Change, Montréal

Funding
The network is part of a $10-million investment from the Government of Canada, which builds on the government's $1.1-billion commitment to help address climate change and implement energy-efficient initiatives. Funding for C-CIARN amounts to $100,000 per year over five years for the C-CIARN regions and $125,000 per year over five years for the C-CIARN sectors.

Revised on May 27, 2002.
