Mesmerized by meteorites?
Tap into Treasure Without Leaving Home

There's a little-known, century-old collection of scientific and technological information about Canada's geology just waiting to be dug up . . . and it's right at your fingertips.

Raw data from rock, fossil and sediment analysis have been transformed by scientists from Natural Resources Canada into maps, reports and CD-ROMs - all available for purchase or loan from Geological Survey of Canada bookstores and libraries in Sidney, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, Québec and Dartmouth.

The best news is that if you don't live in or near these cities, you can order or download many free publications from geopub.nrcan.gc.ca.

What's the most popular download right now? It's a publication called "Gold deposits of the world: distribution, geological parameters and gold content."

And it's not just scientists who will find this on-line resource practical. Farmers, teachers and engineers will, too. In fact, anyone, young or old, mesmerized by meteorites or awestruck by earthquakes, will find an item or two of interest, and often at little or no cost!

Although much of the geoscientific information and research is in downloadable form, some - such as DVDs, posters, field-trip guides, slide sets and transparencies - are best obtained by contacting a bookstore directly and ordering by phone, e-mail or fax.

"Whether the topic is geoscience surveys, minerals, energy, natural hazards, climate change, fossils, hiking, topography, mapping history or marine geoscience, chances are that one of our bookstores or libraries will have a publication, map or poster that covers it," says Louise Fox, sales office manager at the Vancouver bookstore.
