Canada's Natural Resources Now and for the Future

Natural Resources Canada

Natural Resources Canada plays a leading role in helping to improve the quality of life of Canadians through sustainable resource development.

Canada's natural resources sector is one of the most productive, versatile and high-tech sectors in our knowledge-based economy. It includes our forest, energy, minerals and metals, geomatics and geoscience industries, as well as the related services, suppliers and value-added manufacturers.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) plays a pivotal role in helping shape the enormous economic, social and environmental contributions of this sector. Through partnership and innovation, NRCan is working with Canadians to promote the sustainable development and wise use of Canada's natural resources, now and for the future.

The following four objectives guide our department as we develop and implement initiatives to achieve this goal:

  • creating and sharing knowledge for making balanced decisions about Canada's landmass and resources;
  • positioning Canada's natural resources sector as a world leader in innovation;
  • establishing Canada as a global model for resource stewardship and environmental responsibility; and
  • fostering sustainable communities, particularly northern, rural, remote and Aboriginal communities.

We conduct science to generate and transfer ideas, knowledge and technologies. We build a knowledge infrastructure of Canada's land and resources and make it accessible through leading-edge Internet technologies. We promote Canada's international interests to meet our global commitments related to natural resources. We ensure that Government of Canada policies and regulations enhance the contribution of natural resources to Canada's economy, while protecting the environment and the safety and security of Canadians.

The people that make up our diverse team have backgrounds in science and technology, economics, engineering, social science, policy development, communications, strategic planning, audit and evaluation, business, marketing and administration, among others. And we work in partnership with stakeholders from across Canada and around the world, including the private sector, academic institutions, other federal departments and levels of government, and non-governmental organizations.
