Canada's Natural Resources Now and for the Future

Image of a FloodWhen floods, ice storms and other natural disasters strike, NRCan scientists, map-makers and printers work around the clock producing thousands of specialized maps and surveys for police, soldiers and other emergency workers.

Rescuers need good maps and precise data to pinpoint the exact location of phone lines, sewers, highways, water pipes and power lines in emergency situations.

They need the most up-to-date maps -- and they need them fast. Within hours, NRCan can have thousands of specialized charts in the hands of emergency workers.

Thankfully, not every day is an emergency. That same NRCan geoscience expertise is used to decide where to locate businesses, to understand customer demographics, to plan cities and public infrastructures and to decide how to manage natural resources.
