Asian Longhorned Beetle

ALHB BIOLOGY ALHB FACT SHEET

Have you seen this beetle?

The Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALHB) or Starry Skied Beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis) is native to China, Korea and Japan. This insect is a pest of Maple, Poplar, Birch, Willow, Elm, Ash and Horsechestnut. In China, the ALB primarily attacks trunks and branches of healthy or weakened hardwood trees.

Over the last few years, ALHB has been intercepted on import shipments of cargo from Asia. This pest has been associated with un-manufactured wood packing material such as pallets, spools and loose wood dunnage. The ALHB has not been found in Canadian Forest’s but poses a considerable risk to our hardwood species if introduced.

Currently, there are two localized, quarantine populations in the United States (New York and Illinois). These populations are under a continuing eradication program.

If you believe that you may have found this beetle, please contact a local CFIA office or call 1-800-442-2342. There are several native Canadian beetles( White spotted Sawyer beetle, Banded Alder Beetle) which look similar the Asian Longhorned Beetle.
