The Greenbelt provides a rich habitat for a variety of animals, trees and flowering plants. Wetlands in particular are vital to a healthy environment, for both people and animals; they help with watershed management and flood control.

The Greenbelt harbours three important wetlands:

  • Shirley's Bay
  • Stony Swamp
  • the Mer Bleue bog

Mer Bleue is an example of a northern bog ecosystem — like those in the Arctic — and it has been designated an internationally significant wetland under the United Nations Ramsar Convention.

Experiencing the Rural Landscape

The rural landscape has also allowed for the development of several golf courses and riding stables. In terms of heritage, the Greenbelt features:

  • the Log Farm (a living museum of a pioneer homestead restored to the 1850s)
  • the old Lime Kiln
  • the remains of the Carlsbad Springs spa
  • five self-guided interpretive trails

For Researchers

The Greenbelt is a laboratory for scientists from universities and other public agencies. A particular area of interest is natural resources management. Researchers require a land access permit.
