Canada’s Capital Region —  The National Capital Commission (NCC) presents a wide range of activities for kids and adults during Fall Rhapsody 2006, which got underway on September 30 and will end on October 15.

Outdoor enthusiasts visiting Gatineau Park this weekend to admire the Fall colours and picturesque scenery are invited to take part in a variety of special activities.

Weekday Guided Tours

The NCC is offering guided tours of the Mackenzie King Estate and of the Waterfall Trail for students in grades 5 to 7 on October 10 and 11. (Reservations are required.  Please call 613-239-5100).

Lunch time concerts

Visitors will be able to attend concerts featuring classical and chamber music presented on October 5, 6, 10, 11, 12 and 13 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Mackenzie-King Estate. (Please note that there is a parking fee of $8 per day)

How to Identify Trees in Gatineau Park

On Saturdays and Sundays during Fall Rhapsody, as well as on Thanksgiving Monday, outdoor enthusiasts are invited to take part in guided tours of the Sugarbush Trail. An NCC nature interpreter will teach participants how to recognize some of the 40 species of trees that can be found in Gatineau Park. (Guided tours are offered in English at 10:30 am and in French at 1:30 pm).

Children’s Day

On October 9, children will be able to participate in a variety of activities presented at the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre and at the Mackenzie-King Estate.

  • Mackenzie King Estate: Pumpkin carving workshops and games around a tipi from 1 pm to 4 pm.  (Please note that there is a parking fee of $8 per day)
  • Gatineau Park Visitor Centre :  45-minute bilingual shows from Arthur l'aventurier, featuring music and legends will be presented at 1:30 pm and 3 pm.

Fall Rhapsody Radio Programs

Members of the public will be able to tune in to 89.1 FM to make interesting discoveries about Gatineau Park and its history and natural resources. On Fall Rhapsody weekend, between 11 am and 4 pm, a 10 minute program will be presented in French at the beginning of every hour and in English on every half hour on 89.1 FM.  These programs will be integrated to the University of Ottawa’s radio station, CHUO’s regular programming.

Colour Photography Competition

Organized by the NCC, in collaboration with Japan Camera and Fuji Film Canada, the Fall Rhapsody colour photography competition’s theme is the lakes and streams of Gatineau Park in autumn colours. The winning photographs of previous years and this year’s entries will be on display at the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre.

Circulation in the Park

To facilitate motorized circulation, electronic panels will provide information to visitors when certain parking lots (the belvederes Champlain, Huron, and Étienne-Brûlé) have attained their capacity of visitors. The NCC would also like to remind motorists that parking is allowed in the designated areas only, and forbidden along the Parkways.

For more information about Fall Rhapsody 2006, members of the public may contact the NCC at (819) 827-2020, or at 1 800 465 1867.
