National Capital Commission
Canada

Since its foundation in 1959, the NCC has conducted a lot of historical research to support heritage preservation, and regularly responds to public requests for historic information. Over the years, it has accumulated a large and varied collection of documents, some of them priceless originals. The collection deals mainly with the history of cities, towns, buildings and sites in the Capital region and profiles nationally significant people in the Capital region. The large multimedia collection has been evaluated and indexed and was found to consist of:

  • paper records
  • colour slides
  • photographs and negatives
  • maps

Access to the Collection

The collection is actively used by NCC staff (70 percent of use) and increasingly by members of the general public (researchers, students, authors, reporters). The microfiche and slides are maintained in the NCC Library. Other records are stored off-site but can be retrieved on request. Access to the collection can be arranged through the NCC Library.

Library and Archives Canada

Some of the oldest NCC materials — described as having “tremendous archival value” during a 1991 review of the collection by the National Archives of Canada — were later transferred to that organization (now Library and Archives Canada). They are available for consultation at 395 Wellington Street.
