Proactive disclosure Print version | Targeted Geoscience Initiative The Geological Survey of Canada is looking for you!
The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) has had a long history of training and mentoring undergraduate and graduate Earth Science students, commonly through seasonal or part-time employment in its geoscience programs. The advantage to the GSC has been the indispensable contribution by both undergraduate students, and graduate students and their university supervisors, supplementing and extending the efforts of Survey staff both in field and in the laboratory. The advantages for participating students have been many:
TGI3 is the renewal of the Targeted Geoscience Initiative, funded at $25M for 5 years (2005-2010), with an emphasis on geoscience to help sustain the reserves of base metals in vulnerable established mining communities in Canada. As part of that mandate, TGI3 will place significant emphasis on the training of students to enable them to acquire the broad range of skills needed by an expanding exploration sector. In cooperation with provincial geological surveys, TGI3 will be active in four principal geological regions (see map below):
However, the "easy" base metal deposits have been found, and the next generation of discoveries will likely be hidden by extensive glacial deposits, or deeply buried in their bedrock hosts. Therefore, TGI3 will be an innovative program developing new geological, geochemical and geophysical "Deep Search" methodologies to better map the geoscience context of this next generation of base metal deposits.
Students will be needed to work on these geoscience projects in the field and in the laboratory. Graduate students will have opportunities to work on MSc and PhD theses that will contribute to achieving the objectives of the TGI3 program: sustaining the reserves of base metals in vulnerable established mining communities in Canada. While previous experience is always an advantage, we all have to start somewhere, and TGI3 will be looking to engage and train junior undergraduate students too! The Geological Survey of Canada will be visiting as many university Earth Departments as possible this Fall to explain the new TGI3 program and the opportunities for employment and study that it will offer to students of geoscience. We will also be present at many of the Open Houses organised by provincial geological surveys this November-December. If you are interested in working with the Geological Survey of Canada, come and see us at these events, or send your CV to one of the project leaders indicated above, or to Kathryn Coyle.

The Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) is the primary vehicle through which federal departments and agencies recruit students for student jobs each year. FSWEP gives full-time secondary school, CÉGEP, college, technical institute and university students:
There is no deadline for applying to the general inventory. Students may apply on-line or by mail. A paper version of the FSWEP Student Guide and Application Form is available at campus career centres, Human Resource Centres of Canada and Public Service Commission offices. Students must complete a new application each year if they wish to remain active in the inventory. This program is administered by the Public Service Commission of Canada. For further information, please visit the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) web page.
