Sparks Street is an important heritage street in the downtown Capital. Only one block from Parliament Hill, the Sparks Street pedestrian mall is a unique shopping street and an important linear open space in the core area. It acts as an area of transition between the Capital as seat of government and as city. In recent decades, however, the street has suffered a commercial decline. The NCC and other stakeholders envisage the revitalization of the Sparks Street Mall initiatives such as:
- preserving and showcasing heritage buildings
- enhancing the retail function, and introducing arts, cultural and entertainment uses to diversify the area’s appeal
- mixed-use infill projects, introducing residential units wherever possible
- improving the street right-of-way and long-term streetscape renewal
The NCC commissioned a Vocation Study for the Sparks Street Mall Area in order to assess different approaches and strategies aimed at the revitalization of the Mall. Various recommendations of this study are already being implemented, such as new mixed office-residential-retail projects, and plans to remove some of the green pavilions from the centre of the mall.
