Advanced scientific research

This research involves concrete activities in the following areas:

  • Establishing spruce budworm larvaeGeneral forest health (acid rain, pollution, ice storms, insects and diseases) and forest biodiversity;
  • The biological control of forest insect pests (spruce budworm, gypsy moth and hemlock looper) and diseases (annosus root rot, white pine blister rust and Scleroderris canker), using environmentally friendly controls such as Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) and other non-chemical methods;
  • Understanding the effects of natural disturbances (forest fires, insect epidemics, windthrow and ice storms) to develop appropriate management strategies;
  • Understanding the effects of current techniques for forestry activities (harvesting, forest roads and plantations) to improve forestry practices;
  • Molecular analysis of DNATree improvement to obtain better yields and preserve the forest (insect and disease resistance, increased forest biomass, wood quality, biotechnology and genetics);
  • Improvement of our knowledge of how a tree functions;
  • Development of decision-making tools (remote sensing and geomatics);
  • Evaluation of the effects of climate change on forests.

Innovative partnerships

Our personnel participate in managing subsidiary agreements, contribute to development activities and implement various programs in Quebec:

  • Lower St. Lawrence Model ForestCanada's Model Forest Program aims to develop and test optimum sustainable forest management pratices and share this knowledge with the rest of the country (to find out more ...);
  • The First Nation Forestry Program promotes the economic development of First Nations forestry by encouraging job creation and assisting First Nations in managing their forest resources (to find out more ...);
  • The Forest Management on Federal Lands Program targets the improvement of forests on land belonging to the Government of Canada (Valcartier and Farnham military bases) (to find out more ...).

In addition, through a federal-provincial agreement, the CFS-LFC provides financial assistance to woodlot owners whose trees were damaged by the January 1998 ice storm.
