The Fire Commissioner's Office promotes all aspects of fire protection to reduce the number of fires and related deaths, injuries and property losses in Alberta. It has three main service areas:
-
Advisory Services - These include consulting with municipalities, the Alberta Fire Service, and other clients to improve fire protection standards and services. The office provides direction and guidance to "fire, etc" (formerly the Alberta Fire Training School). It maintains links to provincial, national and international fire service organizations, as well as to standards writing, testing and certification agencies.
-
Fire Statistics Reporting System - Every fire that causes death, injury or property damage (except forest fires) must be reported to the Fire Commissioner's Office. The office analyses these reports for fire causes, trends and issues and meets fire statistics needs of both internal and external clients.
-
Public Education/Information - The office researches fire problems and the results form the basis of public education/information strategies, campaigns, publications, newsletters, educational resources, partnerships with corporate sponsors/associations, the Internet, etc, implemented through partnerships with the municipal fire service, regional health authorities, the media, schools and corporate sponsors.
