An Essential
Element in the Food Chain
Mining begins at the ground
level to put food on your table. Fertilizers containing phosphate, nitrogen,
sulphur and potash (of which Canada is the world's largest producer) help fruits
and vegetables grow. You'll find tin-plated steel in the cans used to preserve
them and nickel in the stainless steel cookware needed to prepare them. Halite,
or salt, adds flavour. And when dinner's ready, you'll dig in using stainless
steel cutlery and plates made from a number of different clays.
