Aeronautical Charting Program
Program Concept

The Aeronautical Charting Program strives toward impacting on the issue of «Strong and Safe Communities» by :

  1. recognizing the importance of consistent, complete, current and accurate aeronautical products,
  2. recognizing that both civil and military users derive benefits from the centralized production of civil, joint civil/military and military aeronautical products,
  3. producing aeronautical products according to the specifications of the clients,
  4. maintaining, developing and adhering to appropriate geomatic and aeronautical standards

Committed Outcomes

Longterm Outcomes : 5+ years (Public)

  • Safety of the flying public and of every community over which air traffic flies
  • Confidence of the public in the air transportation system

Intermediate Outcomes : 3-5 years (Expert Aviation Users)

  • Safe and efficient air navigation and concise communications between civil and military pilots and controllers
  • Use of current aeronautical information by clients to fly and to control air traffic safely and efficiently
  • Safe recreational aviation - Avoidance of terrain, obstructions and protected airspace; better match between charted geographical features and those visible from the air; avoid pilot disorientation; affordable Visual Flight Rules (VFR) charts
  • Accurate, complete, timely aeronautical information on products
  • Positive perception of value for money
  • Influence and contribution of Earth Sciences Sector to safe and efficient air navigation

Immediate Outcomes : 0-3 years (Aviation Institutions)

  • Accurate, timely and consistant aeronautical products distributed to civil and military pilots, planners and controllers
  • Accessibility of aeronautical products
  • Viable suite of VFR aeronautical products with up-to-date aeronautical and geographical information
  • Compliance with civil aviation standards
  • Accurate data exchanges
  • Increase cooperation
  • Adopt innovative concepts
  • Increase Earth Sciences Sector contribution to air navigation knowledge base - geomagnetism, geomatics, volcano monitoring, high frequency radio blackout, etc.

Committed Outputs

  • Complete suite of up-to-date civil and military aeronautical products
  • On-line and digital aeronautical products as per agreed client requirements
  • Agreement with NAV CANADA (NAVCAN) and the Department of National Defence (DND) to revamp the VFR charts suite
  • New and improved products and services
  • Requests to NAVCAN and DND for clarifying and correcting instructions for amending products
  • Agreements with Aviation Institutions
  • Earth Sciences Sector advice, proposals, reports and presentations
