The Mackenzie Corridor: Access to Northern Resources

The Mackenzie Corridor, connecting the resource- rich Mackenzie Delta with southern Canada, is the most likely route for the proposed Mackenzie Pipeline which, upon its completion, will significantly impact petroleum exploration activities and local communities, given the resource potential of the corridor itself and likelihood for local employment.

The Mackenzie Corridor: Access to Northern Resources project will build an atlas of multi-thematic digital geoscience including hydrocarbon potential maps and digital basin syntheses of active petroleum areas. This digital atlas-based project uniquely fulfils the needs of communities near the proposed Mackenzie Pipeline route by providing accessible geoscience information, as well, it will stimulate investment by resource companies involved either in initial exploration, or in expansion of in-place production. Community outreach will encourage northerners at Fort Liard and Fort Simpson (Deh Cho), Norman Wells, Deline and Tulita (Sahtu) and other communities to use this geoscience information in their land use planning decisions.

Data acquisition will involve interpretation of existing seismic and well log data, investigations of organic maturation and petroleum source rock, and surficial and bedrock geology field mapping in the Norman Wells region. In addition, mapping and characterization of permafrost conditions will be conducted along the Corridor which will help northern communities and exploration companies in geotechnical risk assessment. Maps, reports, structural and stratigraphic sections, and supporting information will be released as digital GSC Open File Reports and subsequently compiled into a GIS-enabled atlas (DVD-ROM).

Project Priorities:

  • Engage local communities throughout the project's life to improve their ability to participate in impending resource development decisions.
  • Surficial and bedrock mapping on or near the proposed Mackenzie Pipeline route
  • Design and produce an atlas of multi-thematic digital geoscience including bedrock, surficial and permafrost studies, as well as structural and stratigraphic cross sections
