Boothia Peninsula Integrated Geoscience Project

The Boothia Peninsula Integrated Geoscience project, part of the Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI2), will initially focus on acquisition of regional aeromagnetic data on southern Boothia Peninsula and surrounding areas, and begin to engage local stakeholders in the communities of Gjoa Haven, Taloyoak, and Kugaaruk. Subsequently, ground-based fieldwork will be undertaken in collaboration with the Canada-Nunavut Geoscience Office to examine and map the bedrock geology at a regional scale. Supporting thematic investigations will be undertaken in collaboration with the University community through the support of graduate student thesis research.

This project will acquire high-resolution aeromagnetic data and deliver this basic resource exploration tool to GSC scientists, territorial partners, and industrial clients. A series of 1:50 000 scale maps of the total magnetic field and its vertical derivative will be published. On-line access to the data will be made available via the Canadian Aeromagnetic Data Base and its web map service/data delivery mechanism. In collaboration with the Canada-Nunavut Geoscience Office, the project will integrate regional-scale bedrock maps, geophysical data, and topical studies in order to develop new, multi-thematic digital geoscience models.

Project Priorities:

  • Acquisition of aeromagnetic data summer 2004; data processing during winter 2004/2005
  • Work with field geologists and territorial partners to develop appropriate interpretation
  • Release 1:50 000 scale maps and multi-thematic digital products.
