The goal of the Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI) was to turn resource potential into new social and economic benefits by increasing the level and effectiveness of private sector mineral exploration. In particular, to help ensure that Canada's geoscience information infrastructure continues to be state-of-the-art. By improving the quality and quantity of geoscience information available and promoting its rapid dissemination on the Information Highway, the TGI aim was to help stimulate new investment in the mining sector.

NRCan's Geological Survey of Canada and its partners guided new TGI projects to integrate geological, geophysical and geochemical studies in targeted areas of high potential for exploration, provided timely dissemination of the results, and coordinated efforts to ensure the accessibility of this new information to clients.

Geoscience information provided by government geological surveys is essential to the discovery of mineral and energy resources and is a key contributor to the success of private sector exploration. These discoveries are vital to the economic and social well being of many rural and Northern communities.
