Dr. Cox’s research interests involve Forest Health and Biodiversity. More specifically, his work focuses on the effects of abiotic stresses on forest health, as well as air pollution and climate change interactions and the use of passive samplers in assessing forest canopy exposure to air pollutants.

His recent research includes the effects of multiple stresses dealing with the combined effects of ozone exposure and nitrogen deposition on the health of birch trees. Dr. Cox’s studies highlight the predisposition of hardwood trees to spring dieback caused by winter warming events (prolonged thaws).

Additional activities involve the effects of acid fog deposition and its effects on foliar browning around the Bay of Fundy, fog deposition modeling, the study of marine fog as a vector for mercury deposition, and the development of passive air samplers for determining and modeling tropospheric ozone exposure of forest canopies within the the landscape.
