The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed the year 2008 to be the United Nations International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE). The Year's activities will span the three years 2007-2009. The International Year of Planet Earth is a joint initiative by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and UNESCO. The IUGS represents about 250,000 Earth scientists in 117 countries. Dr. Irwin J. Itzkovitch (Assistant Deputy Minister, Earth Sciences Sector, Natural Resources Canada) is a Goodwill Ambassador (see IYPE Organisation) for this initiative. For more information:
