The
First Nations Forestry Program (FNFP) was launched in 1996.
It took over from the Forest Management Program of Indian
Lands (FMPIL) that was in place from 1985 to 1996. The FNFP
is jointly financed and administrated by the Department of
Indian and Northern Affairs and the Canadian Forest Service
of Natural Resources Canada. This national program targets
the economic development of Aboriginal forestry by favouring
job creation and assisting the First Nations to manage forestry
resources as well as to operate businesses in this area while
respecting the principles of sustainable development.
