The Centre will seek opportunities in areas that fall under the mandates of ESS' two principal scientific organizations: Geological Survey of Canada and Geomatics Canada.

Examples of themes that will be developed by the Centre include:

1. Applications of geoscience and geomatics for the sustainable development of natural resources
2. Groundwater resources management and development
3. Natural hazards prevention, assessment and mitigation
4. Spatial data infrastructure and data dissemination
5. Land management and administration
