Dynamic online digital maps for viewing geomatics and remote sensing data

Through the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, the Earth Science Sector (ESS) is providing scientific expertise and technical advice to the Mekong River Commission (MRC) to facilitate viewing geomatics and remote sensing data in the form of dynamic online digital maps. Managers of the Mekong River Basin will be able to access the maps through an Internet portal, and will use them to facilitate flood management and environmental monitoring of the basin. This project is a collaboration between ESS, the Canadian Space Agency and the MRC. It is being implemented under contract by Hatfield Consultants Ltd. from Vancouver. Hatfield is leading a team of three other companies as well as experts from the Remote Sensing Applications and Research Centre (CARTEL) of Université de Sherbrooke.

The Mekong River Commission's (MRC) mandate is to promote the sustainable management of the Mekong River basin. Member countries include Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. The MRC member countries agree to co-operate in the sustainable development, use, management and conservation of water and related resources of the Mekong River Basin. Examples include navigation, flood control, fisheries, agriculture, hydropower and environmental protection.

Project partners: the Earth Sciences Sector, the Mekong River Commission, other government organizations, industry and academia from Canada and the Greater Mekong sub-region
