Northeastern Brazil groundwater project

The Earth Science Sector (ESS), the Geological Survey of Brazil and other partners are working together to ease widespread hardship in drought-stricken northeastern Brazil. ESS scientists, in close collaboration with Canadian industry, have introduced new techniques to identify potential underground sources of potable water based on airborne geophysics and remote sensing, and they are developing new ways to pump, treat and distribute water over large areas using solar energy.

As a means of improving the quality and accessibility of water, Canadian experts are transferring technology and expertise to Brazilian institutions involved with water resource development. This transfer takes place in part through extensive training programs in Canada and Brazil. As well, under the guidance of a Canadian specialist, Brazilian social workers are raising awareness among the local population about the importance of water conservation, the use of sound agricultural practices, and proper waste disposal to avoid contaminating the available water resources. They are also initiating small-scale projects to encourage community participation, such as clean-up campaigns, garbage recycling projects, etc.

Project partners: Earth Sciences Sector, and Canadian and Brazilian organizations, institutes, industries and academia.
