Proactive disclosure Print version | Northern Resources Development Program Stewart River Project, Yukon: Geoscience maps to mineral wealth in the Dawson District
The gold rush of 1897 in Yukon's famed Klondike region led to sporadic mineral exploration and mining activities over the last century. Geoscientific investigations related to these activities were largely detailed in focus and lacked a "big picture" perspective. The Stewart River Project, Yukon: Geoscience maps to mineral wealth in the Dawson District project aims to provide a regional geological context for the area's mineral occurrences through field mapping and topical studies. Geological mapping and a digital compilation of new and existing geoscience data will be done jointly with the Yukon Territorial Government, the mineral industry, and local community stakeholders. Outputs will be tailored to promote industry investment through more easily formulated mineral exploration strategies. This new information, delivered through industry and public outreach, will help Yukoners revitalize their once vibrant mining industry. The project will generate and synthesize new geoscience maps targeting industry and community stakeholders. The digital, multi-thematic synthesis will include bedrock geology, geophysics (aeromagnetic and gravity data), and satellite imagery. In addition, maps and reports will outline mineral potential and prospective stratigraphic settings for a variety of deposit types including the recently discovered Lucky Joe copper-gold deposit. The synthesis will be marketed on CD-ROM/DVD, with a subset of the data accessed through the GSC's and Yukon's internet sites. A layperson poster (Geoscape Dawson) and an associated lecture tour will raise geoscience awareness in the local schools and communities. Project Priorities:
