Characteristics and comparison of the basal Paleoproterozoic cover sequence of the Superior and western Churchill provinces of Laurentia

Rob Rainbird: GSA Annual Meeting, Denver, Colorado November 7-10, 2004

Recent fieldwork and U-Pb dating allow us to divide the lower Paleoproterozoic sedimentary succession of the western Churchill province into 3 sequences. These include: a shallow marine-fluvial quartzarenite (lower) sequence with mainly local provenance, a deeper water (middle) sequence beginning with black shales and platformal carbonates passing upward into siltstones and sandstones that record gradual emergence of the platform and an unconformably to conformably overlying (upper) sequence of immature marine sandstones, including turbidites, derived from distal sources.
