About The Logan Legacy Fund |
The Earth Sciences Information Centre of Natural Resources Canada houses Canada's
largest and most important collection of geoscience literature, photographs
and maps. Of special historic significance is the Sir William Logan Collection
of rare books, maps and pamphlets, originally owned by Logan, who founded the
Geological Survey of Canada in 1842. Many items in this irreplaceable collection
have, over the years, deteriorated and are in urgent need of conservation.
In 1992, the Canadian geoscience community celebrated the 150th
anniversary of the founding of the Geological Survey of Canada. As a lasting
tribute to this milestone in Canadian science, the Canadian Geological Foundation,
a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to assisting the development
of the geological sciences in Canada, set up a special fund to conserve the
Survey's unique archival collections. The American Association of Petroleum
Geologists generously contributed start-up funds totalling $5,000.
This was just a beginning. To preserve the 80 items in the Sir William Logan
Collection ,as well as other rare books, pamphlets, maps and photographs in
the Survey's archival collections, much more money must be raised. We count
on the generosity of all those interested in saving Canada's geoscience heritage
for the future.
